ACTIVIST GROUP SAYS REFERENDUM MAY TAKE PLACE IN MARCH 2011

An activist group promoting the idea of referendum to keep the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in power until 2020 applied for registration to the Central Election Commission (CEC), said head of Activist Group in Astana and city Maslikhat secretary Vladimir Redkokashin.

"Today, the initiative group has filed an application to the CEC. I think within a week CEC will address our request. I hope that in the first week of January 2011, we will obtain the registration and prepare checklist questions for the referendum," he told reporters on December 24 in Astana.

Redkokashin is confident "that the vast majority of people will back the idea of referendum."

"We believe that the referendum may be held next year in March," he said.

As reported certain public figures, who gathered in Ust-Kamenogorsk on Thursday, suggested that the country's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, could stay in office until 2020. The 850 delegates from 16 Kazakh regions, including parliamentarians, members of local legislatures of various levels, public figures and politicians formed an activist group led by Yerlan Sydykov rector at Semipalatinsk State University and endorsed the proposal to organize a referendum to extend the term of the incumbent president until 2020.
