EX-ZHANAOZEN AKIM GETS PROBATION SENTENCE
Zhanaozen. July 23. Interfax-Kazakhstan - On Friday a court in Zhanaozen (city in Mangistau region) handed the former akim (mayor) of the city Zhalgas Babakhanov a probation sentence, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports.
Babakhanov was found guilty under article 307 of the Criminal Code (abuse of office) and was sentenced to 2 years on probation. He was also deprived of the right to hold public posts for three years.
As reported, on December 16-17 civil unrest in the city of Zhanaozen and the village of Shetpe of the Mangistau region killed 15 and injured about 100 people. The unrest was preceded by a seven-month oil workers' strike.
The Prosecutor-General of Kazakhstan Askhat Daulbayev said the illegal actions of the local authorities and oil companies' management had contributed to escalating the tensions.
Another former akim of Zhanaozen Orak Sarbaopeyev and first deputy akim of the Mangistau region Aitkulov were also arrested.
This June Sarbopeyev was acquitted of bribery charges by the regional court.
