A BORDER SERVICE OFFICER WOUNDED IN SOUTHERN KAZAKHSTAN, BYSTANDER KILLED

Astana. June 25. Interfax-Kazakhstan - A border service office has fallen a victim of a hooligan assault in the Kokterek village in the South Kazakhstan.

A group of five men in masks approached the lieutenant of the Yntymak checkpoint in the p[public area on July 24, at 5 p.m. Threatening the officer with a gun they started battering him, while dragging him into their car, said Border Security Committee on Monday.

The officer fired warning shots in the air and at the car tires. The gunfire scared the attackers off, who abandoned their car and fled from the scene. The police searching the car search found a sawn-off gun," said the Committee in a press release.

"The self-defense fire shots hit a bystander, a local resident, who later died in a hospital from a gunshot wound. The officer sustained multiple injuries of varying severity. He is receiving medical attention," said the border service press office.

The investigation is underway to establish identities of the attackers.
