INDEPENDENT PUBLIC COMMITTEE TO WATCH INVESTIGATION OF ARKANKERGEN TRAGEDY

Almaty. June 13. Interfax-Kazakhstan - An independent public committee will be set up in order to ensure the fairness of the investigation into the killing of 15 people at the Arkankergen border post in the Almaty region.

"Members of the public are confident that there are a lot of uncertainties in the tragic events at the border post and the case of the suspected culprit. The independent committee to be created will assist the objective investigation of what happened on May 30," the Amansaulyk public fund said in a statement released on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the committee will include a number of public activists and heads of NGOs.

As reported, on May 30 a border patrol unit from the Sary Bokter border post found the building of the Arkankergen post to be destroyed by fire. Fourteen of the fifteen personnel and a game warden, who lived in a nearby lodge, were dead.

The fifteenth border guard from Arkankergen, Vladislav Chelakh, was later found alive. He confessed to murdering his fellow servicemen and the game warden.

According to the investigation team, Chelakh could not give a clear motive for his crime.
